Choosing a program

Choose a transplant center with questions that matter to you.

A useful comparison starts with your priorities and the questions only a transplant program can answer. Official reports can inform a conversation; they do not choose a center for you.

Start with your priorities.

Programs can use different criteria. Consider location, travel, support, insurance, communication, living-donor services, and the kinds of appointments you can realistically attend. Ask each program how its process applies to you. HRSA explains contacting a transplant hospital.

A personal comparison worksheet.

  • How far can I travel for evaluation and follow-up?
  • What support person, housing, work, or caregiving plan would visits require?
  • What living-donor services and education does the program offer?
  • Who answers questions, and how are updates communicated?
  • What insurance and financial questions do I need to check?

Use official data in context.

SRTR program reports can help you ask informed questions about transplant programs. A report is not a personal prediction and cannot tell you whether a program will accept you. Ask the program to explain its current requirements and how the data should be understood.

Ask about more than one program.

Ask whether you may be evaluated or listed at more than one center, what each program requires, and how you would keep each team updated. Transplant Check does not rank centers, sell placement, or make referrals.

Choose your next question.

Follow your care team’s instructions; for urgent symptoms, contact local emergency services.
